Combinatorics of the Braid Arrangement: From Matrices to Hopf Algebras

Abstrakt: Classical Hopf theory contains a deeper geometric structure. In this talk, we will build a bridge between the geometry of the braid arrangement and the combinatorics of graded bialgebras. We will start by translating geometric objects—like faces and flats—into familiar combinatorial objects such as integer compositions and partitions. Building on this, we will introduce matrix compositions, a framework that captures classical operations like shuffles and quasishuffles. Finally, we will show how these tools give us a geometric way to construct power series monoids and formulate the axioms of positive-graded bialgebras. No prior background in arrangement theory or bialgebras is required.
