Spin-Orbit Coupling and Delayed Fluorescence: From Metal-Free Emitters to Transition-Metal TADF Complexes
Abstrakt: Over the last two decades thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters have become ubiquitous in a plethora of applications involving their luminescence, including organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). TADF involves the up-conversion of the lower-lying triplet (T1) excited state to the singlet (S1) excited state. This mechanism is advantageous as it directs the luminescence through the fast, spin-allowed S1→S0 transition, rather than the ultimately slower, spin-forbidden T1→S0 route, where S0 signifies the singlet ground state.
Principal problem of the TADF process is explaining the mechanism of the T1→S1 up-conversion as it requires involving spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The magnitude of the SOC will have a pronounced effect on the T1→S1 transition and on the TADF mechanism overall but also influence other parameters of TADF emitters.
I will discuss various cases of TADF mechanisms influenced by the SOC and the implications on the experimental picture and interpretation of the phenomenon in each case: starting from the low SOC regime in metal-free donor-acceptor TADF emitters and ending at transition metal complexes displaying strong SOC and TADF.
